CHESTERFIELD, Mo., April 11, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The April 30 deadline for first quarter business fuel tax reporting is approaching. With Linxup GPS tracking devices, business owners and fleet managers can simplify fuel tax reporting by generating reports and calculating the amount of fuel tax due in seconds.

For small- and medium-sized businesses that operate fleets in multiple states, manually collecting data on fuel prices and tax rates and calculating the amount of fuel tax due can be complicated and time consuming. Tools like Linxup GPS tracking devices automatically collect important data that businesses can use to generate IFTA reports in just a few clicks.

Linxup's IFTA add-on is powered by leading software developer ProMiles. The Linxup add-on automatically integrates with GPS tracking devices to gather mileage data, enabling business owners to quickly and easily:

  • Calculate fuel tax information for individual vehicles as well as for entire fleets.

  • Review actual fuel gallons consumed and tax rates for individual states.

  • Identify opportunities to reduce fuel usage by up to 20%.

  • Display fuel-tax reporting data in miles or kilometers.

  • Report on toll versus non-toll miles.

  • Generate reports in HTML format or export to Excel.

Linxup's automated IFTA reporting solution is approved by all US state Transportation Departments. Learn more about Linxup's IFTA reporting feature.

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is an agreement between 48 US states and 10 Canadian provinces. IFTA was created to simplify fuel tax reporting for business fleets because:

  • Different jurisdictions may have different tax rates.

  • Fuel taxes are distributed based on states where commercial vehicles have been driven, not where the fuel was purchased.

The agreement makes it easier to report and pay fuel tax for commercial motor vehicles that operate in different jurisdictions.

In order to comply with IFTA requirements, fleet managers must register qualified vehicles that travel to other participating jurisdictions. If your fleet operates in one jurisdiction but makes occasional trips outside of the state, the International Fuel Tax Association suggests that businesses use trip permits.

IFTA reporting is completed quarterly by all IFTA-licensed fleet owners. The calculation of the tax amount owed or credited is based on the miles driven and fuel used in each state. It also takes into account fuel prices and tax rates, which vary from state-to-state.
