The U S nickle refers to the five cent coin . It is large , but it is not made of nickel .
At one time it was , just as pennies were made of copper and dimes of silver .
Meanwhile it cost the mint more to make pennies and nickle than they are worth .
Thomas Jefferson who's profile graces the U S nickle might be saying "Who at the helm" .
