In northern Brazil, the swing is dramatic. Macapá, the capital of Amapá State, averages roughly 13 to 16 inches of rain a month from February through May, according to 30-year climate data from Brazilian forecaster Climatempo. In October, it averages about one inch. For an operation trying to establish a steady rhythm, the stretch from August through November is when the ground cooperates.
That calendar now frames the next chapter for JZR Gold Inc. (TSX-Venture: JZR) (OTCPK: JZRIF).
A First Dry Season Under New Management
JZR assumed operatorship of the Vila Nova Gold Project in Amapá on May 28, late in the wet season. In July, it contracted RR Bueno to mobilize excavators, haul trucks, a wheel loader and support equipment for mining, ore movement, access road maintenance and plant feed. In August, as the dry season took hold, the company established its first regular operating schedule at the project’s processing plant. By mid-September, approximately 11 tonnes of concentrate had been shipped from the project, bound for São Paulo.
The weather has been part of the plan from the start. In April, CEO Robert Klenk said the priority was improving consistency and reliability “as we advance toward initial concentrate sales following the rainy season in May.” Vila Nova was also built with water in mind. When JZR took over, it noted that berms, roads and retention ponds had been completed under the prior operator, and its July update listed water management infrastructure alongside power and access roads among the assets already in place.
Brazil’s established producers plan around the same cycle. Ero Copper Corp. (NYSE: ERO) (TSX: ERO) operates Xavantina, a producing gold mine in Mato Grosso State. In its second-quarter results, Ero reported 20,553 ounces of gold produced and recovered at Xavantina, up 170% from the first quarter. That total included 11,860 ounces recovered from historic concentrate stockpiles, an increase that followed the end of the rainy season. Ero expects sales volumes from those stockpiles to benefit from drier seasonal conditions through the rest of the year, supported by a mobile filter press and industrial dryer commissioned late in the second quarter.
Building Ahead of the Rain
In West Africa, the discipline looks much the same. Orezone Gold Corporation (TSX: ORE) (OTCQX: ORZCF), which built its Bomboré mine in Burkina Faso and brought it into production in late 2022, completed the main civil infrastructure for its resettlement program in June, ahead of the rainy season. That work included the Bomboré bridge, a diversion channel and a community reservoir. Commissioning of the Bomboré hard rock expansion is scheduled for October 2026.
Seasonal logistics reach their extreme in the Arctic. B2Gold Corp. (NYSE American: BTG) (TSX: BTO) supplies its Goose Mine in Nunavut through an annual sealift, typically between August and October, and a roughly 163-kilometer winter ice road that is constructed every year, with a transportation window running generally from February to May. Working within those windows, B2Gold achieved first gold production at Goose in June 2025 and declared commercial production that October.
What the Coming Weeks Decide
Vila Nova faces nothing as rigid as an ice road. JZR’s corporate presentation states that the property can be reached by vehicle any time of the year via a highway connecting it to Macapá, about 145 kilometers away. Access, however, is only part of the equation. Excavating material, hauling it to the plant and keeping feed moving are the jobs that rain makes harder, and they sit at the center of JZR’s stated priorities: increasing plant operating hours, improving reliability and efficiency, and maintaining a consistent supply of material from the property.
The rains in Amapá typically begin building in December. Until then, JZR is operating through the driest stretch of the year, with its contractor fully mobilized, an operating team in place and a first concentrate shipment behind it. The company has said the operation has stabilized after an initial period in which equipment failures were addressed through repairs and component replacements, and that it is evaluating opportunities to increase operating hours.
For investors, the calendar offers a practical framework. Quarterly reports will measure JZR’s progress, but the season will shape it. Months of reliable ground conditions are when an operator shows how much material it can move and process. What Vila Nova achieves in its first dry season under JZR’s management will establish a starting point. How much of that performance holds up when heavier rain returns will be the next test.
