On September 27, 2026, BHP Foundation announced a C$5.5 million grant to the Nunavut-wide Annauma Community Foundation. The grant supports Inuit-led community initiatives and long-term institutional capacity across Nunavut. Relative to the Foundation's annual granting budget of approximately US$50-75 million, this appears to be a significant commitment to a territory where BHP currently has no active project. What caught my attention: Why is BHP investing relationship capital in Nunavut when it currently has no active project in the territory?

Looking back over the past decade, an interesting timeline emerges...
2010s: BHP entered a JV with Aston Bay, with the right to earn 75% of the Storm Project by spending C$30 million. Ultimately, it walked away.
2023-25: Storm emerged as one of Canada's most significant recent copper discoveries. Its Preliminary Economic Assessment highlighted a low-capex, open-pit development scenario with direct shipping ore (DSO) beneficiation and an estimated after-tax NPV-to-initial-CAPEX ratio of approximately 4.7x.
2024-25: BHP launches Project Camelot, targeting copper across six Arctic areas within the Sverdrup Basin, the same regional geological basin in which the Storm Project is located. BHP looks to cast wide net with copper exploration project in the high Arctic | CBC News

These suggests BHP's engagement with the Arctic appears to be increasing rather than decreasing. Perhaps the bigger question isn't whether BHP is interested in a particular project, rather, is BHP returning to the Arctic?
