Canada’s oil dependence tests Trudeau’s green ambitions

Key intakes:

A study from Pembina estimates that oil sands generate 70% more emissions than the global average barrel of oil

(so roughly 60% less clean)

Oil is accounting for about 10 per cent of Canada gross domestic product.

Climate and emissions plans do not appear to decrease oil growth.

Even in a scenario where global climate actions continue to accelerate, the government expects Canada to pump nearly 6m barrels a day to crude by mid 2030s, up from 5m today, according to the Canada Energy Regulator.
