Marine technology is entering what may become one of its most important investment cycles in decades.
Growing defence budgets, autonomous vessels, underwater infrastructure, offshore energy and ocean surveillance are creating demand for an entirely new generation of maritime systems.
But I do not believe the best opportunities are necessarily the companies building the boats.
The more attractive economics may be found in the sensors, software and mission-critical components installed on those vessels.
These are the picks and shovels of the marine-technology industry.
The Rise of Maritime Autonomy
Navies worldwide are beginning to deploy unmanned surface vessels (USVs), unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at a much greater scale.
These systems can perform missions that are dangerous, expensive or impractical for conventional crewed vessels, including:
Mine detection and clearance
Anti-submarine warfare
Coastal and harbour surveillance
Intelligence gathering
Seabed mapping
Underwater infrastructure inspection
Electronic warfare
Oceanographic research
Border and fisheries monitoring
The scale of the ecosystem is already significant.
There is no authoritative global registry, and the number changes constantly, but industry directories suggest there are now more than 500 active UAV manufacturers worldwide and at least 100 companies developing or manufacturing USVs.
That does not include the hundreds of businesses supplying cameras, sensors, communications, propulsion, navigation, batteries, hydrophones, winches and other components to those platforms.
This distinction is important for investors.
With so many UAV and USV manufacturers competing for contracts, it will be difficult to predict which platforms become the long-term winners. Many will never progress beyond prototypes and pilot projects.
However, every successful autonomous platform requires sensing, navigation, communications, power and deployment equipment.
Instead of betting on one drone manufacturer, investors can potentially own the mission-critical suppliers selling into the entire ecosystem.
As the number of autonomous-platform manufacturers grows, so does the addressable market for the picks-and-shovels providers supporting them.
The shift toward maritime autonomy is also being driven by cost.
A navy can deploy multiple smaller autonomous vessels for a fraction of the cost of a major warship. These platforms can operate for extended periods, cover large areas and keep personnel out of dangerous environments.
Recent conflicts have demonstrated that relatively inexpensive unmanned vessels can threaten ships costing hundreds of millions, or even billions, of dollars.
That has forced naval planners to reconsider how future fleets will be built and deployed.
Follow the Payloads, Not Just the Platforms
There will be many different USV, UUV and UAV manufacturers. Some will succeed, while others will disappear.
Predicting the ultimate winners will be difficult.
However, virtually every autonomous marine platform requires the same essential technologies:
Sonar
Hydrophones
Acoustic arrays
Navigation and positioning
Underwater cameras
Batteries and power management
Satellite and subsea communications
Winches and tether systems
Launch-and-recovery equipment
Data-processing software
This is where I see some of the most attractive investment opportunities.
A specialized sensor or component supplier can sell to numerous vessel manufacturers without having to predict which platform ultimately dominates.
These products are often mission-critical, difficult to qualify and relatively expensive compared with their physical size. Once designed into a defence or commercial platform, they can also produce recurring demand for servicing, upgrades and replacement units.
Underwater Sensing and Subsea Intelligence
The ocean remains an extraordinarily difficult environment in which to operate.
GPS does not work underwater. Visibility is often poor. Communications are limited. Salt water is highly corrosive, and tremendous pressure exists at depth.
That makes reliable underwater sensing, navigation and communications extremely valuable.
Sonar, hydrophones and subsea imaging systems effectively become the eyes and ears of autonomous underwater platforms.
Demand is expanding across several markets:
Naval defence
Offshore energy
Marine research
Subsea cable protection
Port security
Search and rescue
Environmental monitoring
Pipeline and infrastructure inspection
Many of the companies producing this equipment are relatively small, technically sophisticated and largely unknown outside their industries.
That is precisely the type of market where overlooked investment opportunities can develop.
Kraken Robotics: A Canadian Success Story
Kraken Robotics is one of the clearest Canadian examples.
The company has built a growing business around synthetic-aperture sonar, subsea batteries, imaging systems, software and marine survey services.
Its technology serves defence, offshore energy and ocean-science customers.
Kraken’s acquisition of Covelya Group added Sonardyne, EIVA, Forcys, Voyis and Chelsea Technologies, significantly expanding its capabilities in underwater navigation, communications, imaging, environmental sensing and subsea data.
Kraken is no longer simply a Canadian sonar company. It has evolved into a broader global subsea-intelligence platform.
That success has not gone unnoticed by investors. The company has become more institutionally recognized, meaning its valuation now reflects a considerable amount of optimism.
However, Kraken illustrates the potential value of combining specialized marine technologies into a larger platform.
Exail and the Strategic Value of Maritime Robotics
France-based Exail Technologies provides another important example.
Exail is a leader in autonomous mine-countermeasure systems and advanced navigation technology. Its systems allow navies to detect and neutralize underwater mines without putting crewed vessels and sailors directly into the minefield.
The strategic value of that technology has attracted interest from much larger European defence companies.
Exail demonstrates that maritime-autonomy companies capable of winning major naval programs can become extremely valuable strategic assets.
It also provides a valuation roadmap for smaller marine-technology businesses that remain undiscovered today.
Subsea Infrastructure Is Another Major Opportunity
Defence is only one part of the opportunity.
The world has an enormous and growing network of underwater infrastructure:
Telecommunications cables
Energy pipelines
Offshore wind installations
Ports and harbours
Dams and reservoirs
Water and sewer systems
Bridges and marine terminals
These assets require regular inspection, maintenance and monitoring.
Historically, much of that work required divers, crewed vessels and expensive support equipment. Robotics, remote imaging and autonomous platforms can perform many of these inspections more safely, frequently and economically.
The installation and protection of subsea telecommunications cables is particularly important. These cables carry the overwhelming majority of international digital traffic and have become strategically critical infrastructure.
Governments and infrastructure owners can no longer afford to treat the seabed as an unmonitored environment.
The Canadian Opportunity
Canada should be well positioned to participate in this sector.
We have:
The world’s longest coastline
Significant Arctic territory
Major naval procurement requirements
Offshore energy operations
Strong ocean-science capabilities
Established defence and aerospace expertise
Marine-technology clusters in British Columbia, Atlantic Canada and Quebec
Yet many promising Canadian marine-technology businesses remain small and undercapitalized.
They may possess excellent products but lack the sales infrastructure, production capacity or working capital needed to pursue international opportunities.
That creates an opportunity for both investors and strategic acquirers.
Where I Would Look for Undiscovered Opportunities
The most interesting private businesses may be founder-owned marine-technology companies generating approximately $1 million to $10 million in annual revenue.
The ideal business would have:
Proprietary intellectual property
Mission-critical products
Strong gross margins
Repeat customers
Meaningful export potential
Limited direct competition
Products qualified by naval or commercial customers
A capable technical team
Insufficient capital or sales reach to scale internationally
The most attractive product categories include hydrophones, acoustic arrays, underwater imaging, compact sonar, subsea batteries, rugged electronics, winches, tether-management equipment and remote-inspection systems.
These markets may appear small individually, but that can be an advantage.
Large industrial companies often ignore niches that are too small to affect their results. Meanwhile, specialized companies can build strong market positions and attractive economics before larger buyers begin paying attention.
Building a Canadian Marine-Technology Platform
I am particularly interested in the opportunity to combine complementary marine-technology businesses.
Reach Systems, a NameSilo Technologies subsidiary, already produces specialized marine equipment, including winches, underwater imaging systems and products used in hydrophone arrays.
Reach has also sold key products into the burgeoning USV market.
That provides an existing platform from which additional technologies could potentially be added:
Hydrophones and acoustic sensors
Compact sonar systems
Underwater cameras
Rugged subsea connectors
Battery and power systems
Tether-management products
Data-processing software
Inspection technologies
SewerVue, another NameSilo subsidiary, brings complementary expertise in critical-infrastructure and pipe inspection.
Over time, the combination of marine deployment equipment, underwater sensing, imaging and infrastructure inspection could create a differentiated Canadian technology platform.
The objective would not necessarily be to manufacture an entire autonomous vessel.
It may be more attractive to supply the essential technologies used by many different vessel manufacturers, defence contractors and infrastructure owners.
The Opportunity Ahead
Marine technology sits at the intersection of several durable investment trends:
Rising defence spending
Autonomous systems
Critical-infrastructure protection
Offshore energy
Robotics
Artificial intelligence
Ocean data
Arctic sovereignty
Some of the most obvious public companies have already attracted significant investor attention. That means valuation discipline remains essential.
But beneath those larger companies is a fragmented ecosystem of specialized private businesses and public microcaps.
Many have strong technology, real customers and valuable intellectual property, but little investor awareness.
That is usually where I become most interested.
The biggest marine-technology winners may not be the companies whose names appear on the side of the vessel.
They may be the relatively unknown businesses providing the sensors, cameras, hydrophones, navigation systems, batteries and deployment equipment that make the entire vessel work.
In a gold rush, it often pays to own the picks and shovels.
In the coming marine-technology cycle, the picks and shovels may operate underwater.
